![]() Joyxee IslandWith the help of volunteers, RIshi Sowa gathered around 130,000 plastic bottles and built his second recycled island from scratch, in a lagoon that offers protection from bad weather. |
Features
The newer island features a house, 2 ponds and a solar-powered waterfall. The toilets he made does not dump the waste into the ocean. Instead, they collect the waste and it, along with a few leaves, is used as fertilizer for the garden outside the house. The whole island is held together by the roots of the mangrove trees that are planted around the island, which also keeps the island from drifting from the mainland. The roof is made of plastic; rainwater is collected on the roof and used for household needs.
Its creator has stated that Joyxee Island is and always will be and eco-work-in-progress. Although it is small compared to the original (20 meters in diameter), the new island will eventually increase in size. This project has inspired people to travel to Mexico to help Rishi Sowa improve his creation. Some believe that it is a perfect environmental design, because the entire structure is made out of recyclable materials. However, others believe that if another hurricane were to destroy the project, the materials (plastic bottles, mangrove, sand, other plants) will litter the Atlantic Ocean.
